Great Band

I saw my second favorite band in concert this weekend. I decided to give them a bit of a plug here.

Brother

"BROTHER presents a unique blend of world music and rock & roll with enough of a commercial edge to snatch up fans of all ages. BROTHER hits all of the bases in a musical home-run." – Music Connection, March 2002

"a set-list to die for…and big steel balls to make it work." – UK Burn magazine, July 2001

"It's not an earthquake… it's the leather kilt-wearing, didgeridoo-blowing, bagpipe-wielding force of nature that is BROTHER" – Jamie Lee Curtis

Teachers Honored

I’m posting this because my uncle, Richard Moore, is one of the teachers honored.

Lessons:
Teaching more than ABCs

Remember that teacher you had so many years ago who taught you more than the course you signed up for? Remember how you never said thank you? Two local students and one parent found a very public way to thank three very special teachers. The three were among 10 Delaware Valley teachers who were honored last Friday at a Phillies game in Philadelphia – just in time for National Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs May 5 through 11. The week is sponsored by the National Education Association, the nation’s biggest teachers union.

Microsoft Rant

I’m not a big fan of Microsoft. They make products with great interfaces, but flaky guts. On top of that, their business practices are monopolistic. Everybody knows that, right? Of course they do. So when my university struck a deal with the devil to offer free Microsoft products to students (read as “indoctrinate young programmers into M$ dogma”), I wasn’t thilled.

I changed my tune, however, when I yoinked free coppies of Win98, WinXP, OfficeXP, and Visual Studio. I still didn’t like M$, but who can turn down free software, especially enterprise level? I certainly can’t.

Anyhow, all was groovy until I wanted a better Java development environment than Forte. I soon discovered that Visual J++ 6.0 is woefully out of date and Visual Studio .NET doesn’t support Java (don’t get me started on the bastardizations of Java, C# and J#). So now I need to drop a load of cash to get a decent IDE, since my school only supports M$. I am not a happy camper.

Excuse me. I’m feeling all faclempt. Discuss amongst yourselves: Bill Gates bears the mark of the Beast or Bill Gates IS the Beast…

Too Close To Call?

In Pa. Governor's Race, A Democratic Divide

It's a close race for the Democratic candidacy for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Pennsylvania. As a former resident of the Philly suburbs, I have a soft spot in my heart for Ed Rendell. On the other hand, he's pro-choice and a Gore supporter *shudder*. Casey's father was an excellent governor, but how much of his father's skill's did he inherit? He's pro-life, which I like, but he's pro-gun and has almost no political experience. It's a tough decision for those of us registered Democrat.
