Minding “Minding the Planet”

Yes, Mr. Spivack, I would indeed like a link from a blog of the calibre of Minding the Planet. Some of my readers might as well. They might even be able to help you make your good blog even better.

Readers, go check out Minding the Planet. Then, come back here and comment on what you’d like to see more (or less) of there. For myself, I don’t know if there’s any particular type of content I’d like to see more or less of, but I’d like to see an increase in the posting frequency.

Who Deep Links to Me?

Technorati and similar ranking services are nice, and fun to use, but they all seem to have a nasty flaw. They give equal weight to surface links and deep links. It’s nice to be on somebody’s blogroll, but it’s even nicer to be cited. Does anybody know of a ranking service that 1) gives greater importance to deep (i.e., individual post) links and 2) allows one to see incoming deep links only?

Folksonomies for Music Files?

I’m getting tired of having trouble deciding where to put albums and individual songs when I rip them. Compilation albums are particularly troublesome. Strict hierarchical file systems don’t make information accessible in common sense ways. So I’m wondering – are there any tools that allow one to organize music using tags, much like one organizes bookmarks in Del.Icio.Us? For instance, it’d be great if I could find and gather all the songs I own that have a Celtic feel or all the progressive rock without copying or moving any files. Anyone out there know of such a tool?

Warp Speed, Mr. Sulu

Another Star Trek technology becoming a reality?

"The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based on a controversial theory about the fabric of the universe, could potentially allow a spacecraft to travel to Mars in three hours and journey to a star 11 light years away in just 80 days, according to a report in today’s New Scientist magazine."

"The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft." [impulse engine?]

"Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension [subspace?], where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension." [warp drive?]

PVR PC Bleg

I’m thinking about putting together a PVR
PC from an old PIII 866 with 768Mb RAM. Eventually, I will probably buy a Hauppauge
PVR-350
because it has hardware MPEG2
encoding and decoding. In the meantime, though, I’m stuck with a crappy ATI
TV-Wonder
for video capture. I do have a Creative
Labs DXR3
(aka Sigma
Designs Hollywood Plus
) MPEG2 decoder board. Unfortunately, the PVR software
I’d like to use, MythTV, doesn’t
support the DXR3 for video output. Do any of you fine folks know of either a way
to make DXR3 work in MythTV or PVR software that supports the DXR3? Thanks in advance.
