Common Sense Diet

The
Smoke and Mirrors of Food Labeling

By SHERRI DAY

“Food companies – including some that have pledged to act in the face of rising
obesity rates – routinely exploit labeling laws that allow them to make their products
seem less fattening than they really are, according to nutritionists and consumer
groups.”

While deception in the form of dishonest food labels is deplorable, any furor over
it really just underscores a fundamental lack of common sense among consumers. The
trick to losing weight isn’t counting calories. Just eat sensibly. Eat many small
portions throughout the day with some care given to nutrition. Keep junk food to
a minimum. Exercise. How hard is that to understand? Maybe people already understand
but are too lazy to do it. Americans was quick fixes, not hard work. My diet is
far from perfect, but my portions are now smaller and I exercise – Yoga and Tai
Chi. I’ve lost about ten pounds over the last few months.

What’s In The Bag?!? I Can’t Read!!! It’s Bacon!

Vegetarians, eat your artichoke hearts out. 😉

Sizzling second annual Bacon Show
By VINNEE TONG

“ALBANY, N.Y. – The first thing that hit visitors was the smell — that sizzling, hickory, greasy smell that seeps into your clothes and hangs in your hair. The pungent aroma announced to passers-by that the second annual Bacon Show was on. And if the smell didn’t bring people in, maybe the man dressed in a bright pink pig costume would.”

“Brandon Shimoda, an artists and organizer, simply wanted people to come in and share his love of bacon. He and fellow artists displayed photos, paintings and exhibits glorifying the breakfast meat at his apartment Saturday evening. About 20 people showed up.”

Soda Fountain

I went to this place for the first time on Saturday. It’s an old apothecary/soda shop. The interior is authentic 20’s art deco. The family atmosphere is great and so is the ice cream. You owe it to yourself to check it out. 🙂

A Scoop of History

Klavon’s Pharmacy opened in 1920 and was a social fixture in the Strip District for 59 years. The pharmacist dispensed advice and kibitzing along with tonics, salves and prescriptions. The pharmacist’s wife presided over the penny candy counter, the greeting cards and the soda fountain, not to mention the many romances that blossomed there.

Each summer James and Mary Klavon’s eight young grandchildren came for vacations and were serious but gleeful helpers in the store. This American tableau continued until 1979 when the pharmacist passed away. The family closed the doors and sadly ended a chapter of an era.

For 20 years, the doors and windows of the old building at the corner of Penn Avenue and 28th Street were boarded up. Last year, the Klavons’ oldest grandson, Ray Klavon, set into motion a lifelong dream. He blew away the dust, moved out the pharmacy counter, cleared the shelves and added the bare necessities for accommodating the ’90s. When he reopened the doors to the newly named Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor in January of this year, he unsealed a time capsule.

I Want My MSG! (Apologies to Dire Straits)

Should we really be surprised that natural things are better for us than artificial things???

Is Organic Food Provably Better?
By MARIAN BURROS

“IN the debate over whether organic food is better than conventionally raised food, advocates for organic produce say it contains fewer harmful chemicals and is better for the earth, and some claim that it is more nutritious.”
