Politics From the Pulpit

There are great discussions going on in the comments to these posts, both of which
touch on faith in public life. I encourage those who haven’t done already to hop
in. 🙂

Merry
Christmas, ACLU

Still
Hope

I’d like to thank all those who’ve been participating. I don’t usually get such
lively debate in my comments. I really think a blog without comments is only half
a blog, so I really appreciate the exchange of thoughts going on. That said, I now
encourage those who enjoy the chatter about the first post to head over to The
Smedley Log, where H2 has expanded his thoughts from the comments
. He deserves
a traffic spike, too, so spread the love. 😉

Theomorph
also has a post related to this topic
, though he was inspired by an essay by
David Brin, not this blog.

Merry Christmas, ACLU

PowerBlog! has a great suggestion:

I’m sick of seeing anything remotly connected to Christmas being forced from the American landsacpe. The ACLU is behind most, if not all of it. So I thought we should all get together and send a Christmas card to the folks over at the ACLU.

I once sent a Meat Lover’s pizza to the folks at PETA. Never even got a thank you but it’s the thought that counts. If you care to send a bit of Christmas cheer to the lost people at the ACLU here s the address:

ACLU of PA
Greater Pittsburgh Chapter
313 Atwood St.
Pittsburgh, PA 15213

BTW, I’ve decide to back off from my suggestion of not using "Merry Christmas" (hence the title). I still think something like the Easter exchange of "He is risen" and "He is risen indeed" would be cool. Perhaps "He is with us" and "He is with us indeed" (because Immanuel means "God with us") would work.

What’s Your Worldview?

Connexions points to a quiz that tells you how biblical your worldview is (in the eyes of the folks at WorldviewWeekend.com). Like most quizzes, more questions are begged than asked, but I still found it interesting. I have semi-frequent contact with fundamentalists, so I’m familiar with the worldview the test’s authors champion. Being able to compare myself to them using their own measures was interesting. I hope it will generate interesting and informative dialogue.

Here are my results. I hope you share yours with me. 🙂

Your classification is: Moderate Biblical Worldview Thinker
Your score is: 90 points of 170 possible, 52%

Civil Government: section score: 25%, Secular Humanist Worldview Thinker
Economics: section score: 38%, Secular Humanist Worldview Thinker
Education: section score: 58%, Moderate Biblical Worldview Thinker
Family: section score: 100%, Strong Biblical Worldview Thinker
Law: section score: 50%, Moderate Biblical Worldview Thinker
Religion: section score: 56%, Moderate Biblical Worldview Thinker
Science: section score: 25%, Secular Humanist Worldview Thinker
Social Issues: section score: 87%, Strong Biblical Worldview Thinker

There results seem to make sense for a Catholic, since we believe Scripture has authority because the Church vouches for it, not on its own accord. Also, we believe there are truths not taught explicitly in Scripture. Then again, maybe I’m not representative of official Catholic teachings or the beliefs of the "average" Catholic. Let me know. 🙂

Life Is Worth Living

The title of this post was the name of a TV show hosted by Archbishop Fulton Sheen.
It was so popular that it got better ratings than Milton Berle. Sheen, so far as
I can tell, was a very holy man and was responsible for leading a lot of people
into the Church. There’s
apparently some momentum for starting his cause for canonization
. I’m all for
it.

Next Catholic Carnival

I have a suggestion for the next Catholic Carnival theme. Jollyblogger (the nice Protestant fellow who first inspired in the me the strong desire for a carnival for Catholics) is calling for submissions for the second Carnival of the Reformation. I think we should focus CathCarn #9 on that topic and submit our entire carnival as an entry to theirs. They might not accept it, but if they did, it might generate good dialogue.

If you agree, email Jay and let him know. If you want to host it, even better.

Update: This never happened, but I still think it might be a good idea to try sometime.
