Soak the Poor

We at the Earth Summit are very concerned about making sure the poor do not breed as much, thus allowing us to maintain our own opulent lifestyle. So drive that BMW SUV, eat your Chilean sea bass, but just be sure to send that check to Zero Population Growth on time to maintain your positive environmental karma! Oh yeah, and blame it all on the United States while you're at it. 😉

Beauty, Eh :)

My inner Canadian leaps for joy when reading this story. 😉

Healthy Brew: Beer, It Seems, Is Good For You
Studies suggest key is moderation, not binge drinking
By Ken Wells

“Here’s a good bar joke: Beer is good for you – even better for you than red wine. Here’s what’s funnier: It could actually be true. After more than 20 years of research and scores of studies on the effects of moderate alcohol consumption on health, beer is slowly bubbling to the top as a beverage that not only lifts spirits but delivers protection against major ailments such as heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, diabetes and dementia. The data seem so compelling that the National Beer Wholesalers Association, an Alexandria, Va., trade group representing the nation’s beer distributors, recently put on an oxymoronic sounding ‘health and beer’ seminar and put out a press release that declared: ‘Eat right, exercise and drink a beer a day may be the way to keep the doctor away.'”

Not IUP?

I would have given the honors to IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania, aka I Usually Party).

Indiana U. Named Top ‘Party School’
By SHANNON DININNY

“BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Indiana University was crowned the nation’s No. 1 ‘party school’ Monday in an annual Princeton Review survey that school leaders and medical experts derided as irresponsible and unscientific.”

AMA urges an end to ‘party school’ rankings

“CHICAGO (AP) — The Princeton Review should stop publishing an annual ranking of top ‘party schools”‘because it ignores the risks of heavy drinking and offers a skewed view of college life, the American Medical Association says. “

Do It Yourself

Oil changes and home repairs are one thing, but do-it-yourself surgery is outrageous. I feel so bad for this guy.

Pensioner forced to chop off rotting finger due to surgery delay

A New Zealand pensioner chopped off one of his rotting, gangrenous fingers with a pair of scissors because he could no longer stand the pain after waiting 20 months for surgery, it was reported yesterday…Matthews is suffering from dry gangrene following cardiac surgery 20 months ago in Christchurch Hospital and his fingers are rotting and dying as a result. Two of his fingers have already rotted off and he is desperate for surgery to amputate two remaining fingers.

A picture of this poor fella can be found here.

Moral of the story? Socialized healthcare sucks and lowers the standard of care for everyone.
