Advil on Ash Wednesday

Today’s Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. It’s also the beginning of what’s become an annual caffeine withdrawal headache. The things I do for penance…

One of the Priests at my Church made a really terrific point about “giving things up” for Lent. He basically said that Lent isn’t about giving up Starbucks or donuts or something that you should be doing anyway, or that serves another, more self-serving pupose… using Lent as a way of doing yourself a favor (getting off caffeine, losing weight).

I get the whole “giving up material things to focus on the spritual” but I’m not really sure that a three-day caffeine headache is going to do that.

I dunno. I’m still kind of new to this. What do you think?

    :-)

No, seriously, I gave up alcohol (among the other usual things) this year. I thought it would result in headaches, but so far it hasn’t. My 4th (age almost 6) actually committed herself to reading a book a day to my 5th (age 4), which was I think a good example of adding a good thing instead of eliminating a good (or indifferent) thing.

On a different note… Rich, your “words” to me on that monster lady’s blog were quite uncalled for. And also hurtful. I don’t think I ever resorted to petty name calling. If you really have a grievance, you should contact me personally and try to resolve it (spn AT alcatel-lucent DOT com).

    Cheers!
