Perhaps there is some truth the allegation that most Republicans don't really want abortion to end. If it did, they wouldn't have a wedge issue to rally voters around.

I don't believe it. Abortion is already legal and we still have a pro choice movement. If abortion were made illegal they would redouble their efforts, and in response Republicans could still run on a pro life platform.
