Repost: Discovering a Season

[The following a revised version of a previously published post. – Funky]

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. I get so excited that I start listening to my Christmas music at the beginning of November, much to the surprise and chagrin of some of my loved ones. Last year, I asked myself what I’ve been getting excited about. Is it the celebration of Christ’s birth? I wish I could say so, but the truth is that I’ve been enamored with the secular trappings of the season. Decorating the Christmas tree, baking cookies, singing catchy tunes, visiting relatives, watching classic movies, giving and receiving gifts (sadly, mostly the latter), playing in the snow (in those few lucky winters), and other generally faith-free activities have been Christmas’ raison d’etre for me.

Prayer Requests

Some members of my family are in need of prayers.

my Aunt Ellen: testing on breast lump tomorrow and complete hysterectomy on December
5

my Great Aunt Amy: struggles with depression and mild dementia

Elissa (Amy’s daughter in law): recently had double mastectomy and doctors may have
found more cancer

my dad: borderline diabetes and high blood pressure

Rub the New Buddha?

Apparently, there’s a new Buddha on the block. (Fedora Tip: Say What Now?)

"Thousands of pilgrims are pouring into the dense jungle of southern Nepal to worship a 15-year-old boy who has been hailed as a new Buddha."

"Devotees claim that Ram Bomjon, who is silently meditating beneath a tree, has not eaten or drunk anything since he sat down at his chosen spot six months ago."

"Witnesses say they have seen light emanating from the teenager’s forehead."

"’It looks a bit like when you shine a torch through your hand,’…."

Well, I can’t say whether he’s another Buddha or not, but I can point out that humans do indeed emit light from their foreheads.

Prayer and Information Request

My sister, a member of the National Guard, asked me to request prayers and information
on behalf of am Army Reserve friend of a hers from basic training. Since Katrina
hit the Gulf Coast, my sister has been trying to reach Teresa Export to no avail.
She is worried about her safety and that of her child.

She’s a 20-something black woman, approximately 5’7″ tall with an average build.
Her son, Deondre is around 1 year old. Last my sister knew, they were living in
Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I know that’s not exactly rare combination, but I figure
we have nothing to lose by trying. If anyone has any information about Teresa Export,
please email me.

If you are of the praying sort, please remember Teresa and Deondre in your intentions.

Update 09/05/05: Teresa contacted my sister yesterday. She and her son are
fine. She didn’t give any details (such as whether she fled before the storm or
endured it). I’ll let you folks know when I know more. Thanks for all the prayers.
