I found a verse to Samuel Wesley's "The Church's One Foundation" that I'd never heard before. It was in my grandmother's old Lutheran hymnal (Before the green book, before the red book, there was the black book.). I like it a lot.
Though, with a scornful wonder,
Men see her sore oppressed
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distressed;
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.

You've never heard that verse before? I recall singing it last time we sang the song at whatever Mass I was at… though I'm not sure I have any memories of it prior to that…

Posted 15 Sep 2004 at 9:29 pm ¶I like that verse best…. I've heard it before, although it is sadly cut out of many hymnals today. After all, who wants to talk about schism, if the church is just an invisible body of all true believers?

Maybe we should write it into the hymnals at Heinz Chapel…it's certainly not a hard hymn to locate in those hymnals.
