Lifeless Labels

Tom Carter earned a spot on my blogroll with this post. It's a thoughtful essay about labeling people "liberal" or "conservative". He contends that he is neither and feels pigeon-holed by a false dichotomy. I know the feeling.

Welcome to the extreme center, Tom. We're tightrope walkers who have one end of the pole far to the left and the other far to the right. Are we balanced? Yes. Are we represented well? No.

    Thanks for the link!

I like the term "extreme center." I never thought of it that way, but that pretty much describes the way I often feel.

I sometimes think a viable independent third party, occupying the middle of the political spectrum, might be a good thing. I don't really expect to see it, but there may soon be enough folks tired of both the left and right to give it a try.
