Pennsylvanian legislators have developed a plan for reducing school taxes. The alternate
source of revenue would be slot machine profits. In order to take part in this program,
called Act 72, school districts must opt in and lose some property tax revenue.
The deadline for opting in is May 30. For
various reasons, many districts are giving Act 72 a pass. I don’t blame them.
Voices for Animals is presenting a film about alleged deceptions about WMDs in Iraq and participating in an anti-war march. Did we blow up a lot of wildlife over there or is this just comical mission creep? This reminds me of some of the shenanigans at the anti-war rally and march just before the war in Iraq. A war protest is not the appropriate time and place to make a fuss about GLBT rights or abortion.
The first Catholic Engaged Encounter (CEE) weekend was given in Detroit in 1974 with the aide of the Marriage Encounter Resource Community. In 1975 CEE became a self-sustaining National Ministry. CEE has had astonishing growth throughout our country and also throughout the world. CEE is now taking place in more than 30 countries around the world. It has become the rpeferred Marriage Preparation Program for the Catholic Church, and today many other Christian denominations also offer Engaged Encounter programs. Engaged Encounter teams are all volunteers.
Earlier this month, my fiance and I attended a Catholic Engaged Encounter weekend. I've already written about the site and the Masses. This part is about the content.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Pacifists have just as much right to protest as anybody. In fact, sometimes I even join them. However, last I checked, protesters didn’t have the right to demand no barriers/pens, free water, free transportation, and monetary compensation.

“HARRISBURG — After nearly two hours of emotional debate on legislation to prohibit
same-sex marriages in Pennsylvania, state House members decided they weren’t ready
to take a stand on the hot topic, and put off a vote until after the Nov. 2 election.”
I’m really at a loss as to why there’s even a debate in the PA legislature about
homosexual marriage. According to Title
23, Chapter 17, Section 1704, neither in- nor out-of-state homosexual marriages
are recognized, endorsed, or legal. I’m not a lawyer, nor do I know any. Perhaps
a reader can help me with this.
“It is hereby declared to be the strong and longstanding public policy of this
Commonwealth that marriage shall be between one man and one woman. A marriage between
persons of the same sex which was entered into in another state or foreign jurisdiction,
even if valid where entered into, shall be void in this Commonwealth.”
