Out of Touch

Democrats already hate Bush and now it seems 1 of 5 Republicans isn’t so found of
him either. I’m not one of the conservatives mentioned in this article that finds
Bush insufficiently conservative (mostly because I consider myself moderate). However,
this article is of interest because it shows that Bush’s pale imitations of Reagan
aren’t fooling the entirety of his own party.

Bush’s
shaky base

Robert Novak
May 20, 2004

“WASHINGTON — During George W. Bush’s keynote address to the 40th anniversary black-tie
banquet of the American Conservative Union (ACU) last week, diners rose repeatedly
to applaud the president’s remarks. But one man kept his seat through the 40-minute
oration. It was no liberal interloper but conservative stalwart Donald Devine.”

And the Beat Goes On

Another day, another spin of Earth, and another statement regarding withholding Communion. More and more foreign bishops are commenting on the political mess here.

Kerry Shouldn't Take Communion, Says Canadian Bishop
Cites "Defiant Dissent"; 2 Arizona Prelates Won't Hold Back the Eucharist

"CALGARY, Alberta, MAY 21, 2004 (Zenit.org).- U.S. presidential hopeful John Kerry should voluntarily abstain from, or be denied, Communion 'by reason of his defiant dissent from fundamental Catholic teaching,' says a Canadian bishop."

Protecting the sanctity of the Eucharist is not just a political issue. On the other hand, I'd like to see a less lop-sided defense of Catholic teachings. If only I had a dollar for every time a liberal has said, "What about other unCatholic positions (i.e. aside from abortion) held by politicians?"

Cardinal Expects Many U.S. Prelates Wouldn't Restrict Holy Communion
In Interview With Italian Magazine

"ROME, MAY 21, 2004 (Zenit.org).- Cardinal Theodore McCarrick speculates that many U.S. bishops would not like to see the Eucharist used as a sanction against pro-abortion politicians."

Out of Line

I'd like to apologize for an inappropriate jab at John Kerry I made yesterday . While I can be suspicious about his child-rearing abilities all I want, I shouldn't make unsupportable statements like I made. His daughter's faux pas should not enter into political discourse unless I have proof (a) that he raised her poorly and (b) that such a failure serves as indication of his character.

I'm sorry and I thank John for taking me to task.

I can, however, still wonder aloud, "What in heaven's name was Ms. Kerry thinking?!?" Ever hear of a bra? How about fabric that isn't transparent?

Doomed to Repeat

Torturous
History

May 19, 2004
Scott Paulsen

“History. It’s, like, deja vu all over again. I can’t tell you the number of times I have heard this statement in the past couple
of weeks: We shouldn’t treat the prisoners of war like that because we’re Americans
and Americans don’t do things like that. We’re better than that.”

“That’s a nice sentiment. And if it makes you feel better, keep saying it to yourself. But the fact is that, no, we’re not.
We’re not better than that. Never have been. It’s history.”

Poor Upbringing

I'd rather not bring personal attacks into politics, but it's apparent from this photo that John Kerry failed to teach his daughter how to dress properly and modestly for a public audience.
