Not Buster

(Buster
Poindexter
)

At least I can agree with John Poindexter on the last point.

“…four or eight years from now we’ll elect someone who grew up on the Internet
and is more willing to sit at a keyboard and do things on his own.

> Al Gore!

God, I hope not.”

Poindexter
Confidential

The Caltech physics wonk infamous for Iran-Contra, Total Information Awareness,
and terrorism futures talks about life as a not-so-private citizen.
By Spencer Reiss

“John Poindexter’s career has played out in the headlines: Iran-Contra conspirator,
the Pentagon’s Big Brother in chief, godfather of a futures market to predict terrorism.
But there’s an alternate reality: The 67-year-old retired admiral is the only serious
technologist ever to reach the highest circles of power in Washington. He’s a Caltech
PhD who two decades ago dragged the White House into the digital age, plugging in
everything from fiber-optic video to email. He uses Groove Networks’ Workspace to
keep in touch with friends and rhapsodizes about encryption like a cypherpunk. In
the first interview since Congress forced him to step down last summer as head of
Darpa’s Information Awareness Office, Poindexter speaks out about privacy, sim terrorists,
and Iraqi WMD.”

Misused Resources

Unwise spending in the federal government is not a new phenomenon, but given the
seriousness of the matter, this is pretty atrocious. I strongly suspect that the
Clinton administration shares some of the guilt.

More
Agents Track Castro Than Bin Laden

By JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writer

“WASHINGTON – The Treasury Department agency entrusted with blocking the financial
resources of terrorists has assigned five times as many agents to investigate Cuban
embargo violations as it has to track Osama bin Laden’s and Saddam Hussein’s money,
documents show.”

Digital Chads

Just what we need – another controversy like Florida in 2000. The technology for
voting definitely needs to be replaced. The antiquated device I used on Tuesday
looked like a relic of the Truman administration. The new stuff worries me though
because it may not be an improvement in reliability.

Is
E-Voting Safe?

Millions will cast their ballots this year using voting machines based on PC technologies.
We answer the most pressing questions about ballot box security.

“With the presidential election less than six months away, election officials
are scrambling to purge polling places of the hanging chads, butterfly ballots,
and other paper-related problems that plagued the 2000 contest. New touch-screen
machines have already been deployed in 27 states.”
