Bye, Bye, Marty

June 22, 2005

I still get a number of hits to my post about the firing of Christian talk show host Marty Minto. I never quite finished it because I got tied up in more important things, so I decided to come back and do just that. For those interested, the original entry can be found in its entirety (misspellings, bad grammar, and all) here.

Trolls

troll

"An Internet troll is a person who sends duplicitous messages to get angry responses. The term derives from the phrase "trolling for suckers" and ultimately from trolling for fish. The term is frequently abused to slander opponents in heated debates and is frequently misapplied to those who are ignorant of etiquette." – Wikipedia

I didn’t like trolls when I dabbled in Usenet, nor did I like them back in IRC‘s hayday. I’m even less fond of them when they pontificate in my comments. >:{

On the other hand, attracting gadflies could be taken as a sign of moving up in the blogosphere.

Funky’s First Law of Blogging: "You’re doing something right if trolls think you’re important enough to annoy."

There might be more laws someday. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though. 😉

Blogging 101

Simon World has a great post on the basics of blogging. If you’re looking for a text book treatment, look somewhere else. If you want boot camp, this might be more your style. Jollyblogger sums it up well:

"[H]e’s got a lot of good tips and it is worth your while to read this thing and follow his advice. Well, follow his advice, but I think it goes without saying that those of us in the Blogdom of God don’t want to be following his advice to talk about our sex lives or use porn to attract visitors."

If you’ve been thinking about blogging, but want to know what you’re getting into first, give "Everything you wanted to know about blogging but were afraid to ask" a read. You’ll either want to start a blog ASAP or be scarred for life.

Not Just for Jews

This prayer is useful for more than just Jews. In fact, I think I might start saying
it, or a version of it.

Rabbi
Offers Prayer for Web Porn Browsers

“JERUSALEM (Reuters) – An Israeli rabbi has composed a prayer to help devout
Jews overcome guilt after visiting porn web sites while browsing the Internet.” ‘Please God, help me cleanse the computer of viruses and evil photographs which disturb and ruin my work…, so that I shall be able to cleanse myself (of sin),’ reads the benediction by Shlomo Eliahu, chief rabbi in the northern town of Safed.”
