Stop the Government Plan to Mine our Privacy

Recent media reports have revealed that a little-known Defense Department office is developing a computer system called “Total Information Awareness” that threatens to turn us all into “suspects” without proof of criminal wrongdoing.

Not only do Big Brother warning alarms go off with this one, but a few others as well. I’m no Masonic conspiracy nut, but the logo for the Information Awareness Office freaked me out.

Representative Government?

This is an interesting site that’s a rallying point for those opposed to current US anti-terrorist policies. While, I agree that we’re going too far, I do not believe it’s an issue of oil. Jerry says it better:

"I am very concerned about some of the privacy intrusions and some of the detainment policies of suspected terrorists, but I do not think of this as ‘war for oil’ transaction, and even most of the anti-war politicians do not stoop to such simplicity–if we want oil, we’ll drill in the ANWR or get it off the Russians. Sure the Iraqis have plenty, but the dangers and capital required are not good business. I do agree that we should protect the rights of those oppose ‘the war’, and we should not deem entire countries or peoples evil (regimes are a different matter!). This petition, therefore, is not in my name. :)"

Not In Our Name

The Not In Our Name Project is a national network of individuals and organizations committed to standing with the people of the world. As the Not in Our Name Pledge of Resistance states, "we believe that as people living in the United States it is our responsibility to resist the injustices done by our government, in our names." Our mission is to build, strengthen and expand resistance to stop the U.S. government’s entire course of war and repression being waged in the name of "fighting terrorism."

Now You See It…

…Now you don’t. I agree with the creators of this software. Thomas Jefferson said it well. (Paraphrased) Those who would give up freedom for security deserve neither.

Hackers Tackle Censorship With New Tool
By Kim Zetter

Camera/Shy encrypts messages into images, intended for political dissidents but useful for any secrets.

The steganography tool, to be released on Saturday at the H2K2 hacker convention in New York City, will let users hide encrypted text within any gif image placed on a Web page. But critics say the tool can also be used by criminals and terrorists to disguise communication or plans for illegal activity.

Religion and Politics

The ACLJ can be a bit reactionary at times, but they have this right.

Religious
Freedom of Speech Petition

“Churches and Christian organizations should be free to take strong positions
on moral issues, even issues of political consequence, for the sake of our nation’s
spiritual health. The Internal Revenue Service should not have effective censorship
power over religious speech by wielding the power to deny tax-exempt status to a
religious organization. ”
