The Great Divide

The
Politics of Partisan Neutrality

“Americans who want to understand conflicts between Democrats and Republicans
during the election season have received precious little help from the media. While
reporters usually recognize that there is some sort of problem about ‘values’ and
about ‘faith-based’ principles, and that the Democrats and Republicans are often
on opposite sides, writers and editors tend to publish news and analysis as if the
situation were as follows: The Christian right, having infiltrated the Republican
Party, is importing its divisive religious ideas into our public life, whereas the
Democratic Party is the neutral camp of tolerant and pluralistic Americans.”

This gives me some insight into what’s happened to the Democratic Party. I was raised
by staunch Democrats and I voted as a Democrat for 7 years. Now I’m independent
and I register either Republican or Democrat depending on which primary is more
crucial to my beliefs (such as the Toomy vs. Specter race). I used to the think
Republican party was just a bunch of redneck Evangelical yahoos. I’m starting to
understand why so many of my Christian brethren vote Republican. The party still
does things that disgust me, so I won’t declare myself a Republican anytime soon,
but I’m more open to their point of view.

Open To What?

I've often wondered about their motto myself. The "open minds" part worried me most. An open mind is like an open trap. It isn't useful unless it closes on something.

Methodist 'Openness' Motto Queried — Open to What?
Acquittal of Lesbian Pastor Source of Distress at UMC's General Conference
By Fred Jackson and Jim Brown

"(AgapePress) – United Methodists meeting in Pittsburgh appear deeply divided over whether their denomination's motto –'Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors' — requires acceptance of behavior that the Bible calls sinful."

Sometimes Schism is Good

parishes that oppose same-sex blessings and the ordination of gay clergy”

Visiting
bishop wants end to rhetoric on gay clergy

By Steve Levin, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“An influential Church of England bishop visiting Pittsburgh this week believes
the crisis in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion over gay ordination is
related to America’s unilateralism.”

I love this quote. “The network does not fit within the governing structure
of [the Episcopal Church],” The network against gay marriage and gay clergy
doesn’t fit, but the American Episcopal Church does?!? They laughed in the face
of the global Anglican Church and established rules and procedures when they “consecrated”
an actively gay bishop.

When Is A Split A Good Split?

When it’s right-thinking (that’s what orthodox means) Episcopalians fighting heterodox
brethren who seem to think open-minded means empty-headed.

Orthodox Anglicans May Split From Church
By JUSTIN BERGMAN

“WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Nearly 3,000 Episcopalians opposed to the church’s election
of an openly gay bishop last year are gathering in northern Virginia this weekend
to discuss a possible formal split in the national Episcopal Church.”

Sanctioned Sin

I hope and pray that orthodoxy will prevail in the Anglican Church.

Nigerians Protest Gay Priests, Bishops
By DULUE MBACHU

“LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Anglican Church held a day of fasting and prayers Monday to protest the confirmation of homosexual priests and bishops in the United States and Britain. “

Maybe this will lead to a new Oxford Movement. Cardinal Newman, pray for us.

Vatican eggs on Anglican split in US
Cardinal praises conference planning break over gay bishop
By Stephen Bates

“The Vatican has publicly endorsed US Episcopalian hardliners gathered in Dallas to plan the breakup of their liberal national church. In a surprise letter from Rome on behalf of Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Catholic enforcer of doctrinal purity, wrote to the organisers praising their stand. Support has also come from one of Britain’s most respected evangelicals.”

I hope and pray that orthodoxy will prevail in the Catholic Church. We are supposed to be in the world, but not of it. Just because secular society approves of homosexuality, doesn’t mean the Church should. Doctrine isn’t about what makes us feel good or what’s easiest. It’s about following when the Holy Spirit leads and obeying God’s commandments as set forth in scripture.
