Mullitude

Ahh…the mark of the true redneck.

Call out the Mullitia
Praise or derision: For watchers of hairstyles, that’s the long and short of it

It isn’t every day you can walk down the street and be the object of admiration and derision at the same time. But for people who sport a mullet these days, beware: The eyes of the mullitia are upon you.

For the uninitiated, a mullet is that haircut from the 1980s — you know the one, short on top, tight at the sides and long in the back. Think Billy Ray Cyrus, Lionel Richie and Joey Buttafuoco (their hairstyle, not where are they now).

Addendum: Here’s a bonus article for brave archive surfers who find themselves here.

For ‘mulletheads,’ it’s not just a hairstyle, it’s a lifestyle

Some 20 years ago, mullets freely roamed the Earth without shame and free of rancor. They were badges of honor and rugged, rebellious individualism.

In the modern mullet era, singers Michael Bolton, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Ray Cyrus not only popularized but exalted the hairdo.

The Boltonian-Jovian Age gave way to the Cyrusian Age. Then, a darkness descended upon the Earth and the mullet fell out of favor, becoming a much maligned and oft-loathed coiffure that exposed anyone who wore it to great ridicule.

Sailor’s photo mailed to mother shows up 59 years later

"HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (AP) — Richard Ebling, a 19-year-old proud to be photographed with his fellow graduating sailors from a Navy boot camp, wanted the picture mailed home to his mother in Pennsylvania. It never reached her, but the package did make it to his family — 59 years later."

Teachers Honored

I’m posting this because my uncle, Richard Moore, is one of the teachers honored.

Lessons:
Teaching more than ABCs

Remember that teacher you had so many years ago who taught you more than the course you signed up for? Remember how you never said thank you? Two local students and one parent found a very public way to thank three very special teachers. The three were among 10 Delaware Valley teachers who were honored last Friday at a Phillies game in Philadelphia – just in time for National Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs May 5 through 11. The week is sponsored by the National Education Association, the nation’s biggest teachers union.

[Today, I welcome the guest commentary of my roommate Jerry Nora. He finished his baccalaureate work this week with three degrees: physics, philosophy, and molecular biology. He is highly devoted to the study of bioethics, which he will pursue as a MD/PhD student next year. He is former president of the University of Pittsburgh's Students for Life group and has participated in efforts to bring a chapter of Do No Harm to Pitt. – Funky]

This is a reply to "Too Close to Call?" posted Wednesday, April 17

The chief objections to Casey's gubernatorial race that Funky Dung raised are that (1) he's not as experienced as Rendell or would be as effective in getting the commonwealth's economy moving, and that (2) even though Rendell is pro-choice, a governor has little sway in bioethics. I'll take on these two objections in turn.

Too Close To Call?

In Pa. Governor's Race, A Democratic Divide

It's a close race for the Democratic candidacy for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Pennsylvania. As a former resident of the Philly suburbs, I have a soft spot in my heart for Ed Rendell. On the other hand, he's pro-choice and a Gore supporter *shudder*. Casey's father was an excellent governor, but how much of his father's skill's did he inherit? He's pro-life, which I like, but he's pro-gun and has almost no political experience. It's a tough decision for those of us registered Democrat.
