Under My Skin

Why do the stuck songs have to be so lousy? You think I actually WANT Backstreet Boys bouncing around my brain for hours?!?

Why we can’t get that song out of our heads
With rare exceptions, the brain has a deep affinity for music
Brad Evenson,National Post

“One evening in 1995, a Montreal real estate agent and his wife went out for a romantic dinner. It was their wedding anniversary. They felt fortunate. The husband had suffered a minor stroke a few years earlier and had recovered. In neurological test after test, his reading, speech, memory and motor functions seemed to be normal. He had even returned to work and made some lucrative deals. During dinner, his wife noticed a violinist playing for restaurant patrons. ‘Let’s get him to play our song,’ she suggested.”

Funny Philosophy

This article reads more like a Douglas Adams story than a work of a philosopher. It’s quite readable, even to the layman, and it’s hilarious. If you’ve ever wondered about mind, body, identity, and other issues in the philosophy of psychology, this is a fun place to start your exploration.

“Where Am I?”
DANIEL C. DENNETT

Now that I’ve won my suit under the Freedom of Information Act, I am at liberty to reveal for the first time a curious episode in my life that may be of interest not only to those engaged in research in the philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience but also to the general public.

Are They Nuts?!?

Zap!
Scientist bombards brains with super-magnets to edifying effect
By Carey Goldberg

“Just by pointing his super-magnets at the right spots on your head, Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone can make you go momentarily mute or blind. He can disrupt your working memory or your ability to recognize faces. He can even make it harder for you to say verbs while nouns remain as easy as ever. Weird, yes. Fringe, no. “

Who in their right mind would let someone scramble their thoughts with a magnet?!? I feel like Bones decrying the dangers of transporters. The technology has great potential, but is it safe?
