Scared Stupid

If these “secularity” measures go through, the faithful remnant of France
should make t-shirts, jeans, or some ubiquitous item take on religious symbolism.

By Timothy Heritage

“PARIS (Reuters) – French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin vowed on Saturday
to press on with plans to introduce a law that would ban Muslim headscarves in state
schools despite growing opposition from Muslim protesters and some politicians.”

No Constitution for the Capitol?

I no fan of guns or the NRA, but this is ridiculous and inconsistent. Are citizens of DC not Americans? Are they not guaranteed constitutional rights?

Gun Rights Aren't for District, Judge Rules
By Carol D. Leonnig

"The constitutional right to bear arms doesn't apply to the District of Columbia's residents, a federal judge ruled yesterday in rejecting the claim of several city residents who contended that a 1976 city law banning the possession of guns left them unfairly vulnerable."

Making Spam Legal?

Typical government. It seems bad wording has led to the legalization of certain types of spam. Arrrrgh!

Spam Slayer: Why Spammers Love the CAN-SPAM Law
Antispam laws make some spamming legal and do little to quell the onslaught.
Tom Spring, PC World

"The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) law targeting junk e-mail is supposed to lighten our in-box spam load. But scant weeks since the federal law took effect, I’m still getting just as many lame pitches as I did in mid-December."

Senate Amends, Approves Spam Bill

Updated CAN-SPAM Act faces another vote, but could become law soon.
By Grant Gross

"WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate approved a national spam bill on Tuesday that would allow fines of up to $6 million or jail terms of up to five years for some spammers. But the bill’s legislative journey is not over yet. The Senate, by unanimous consent, approved the House version of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act of 2003. The bill must now return to the House for final approval because the Senate version included some technical corrections to the House version, said a spokesperson for Senator Conrad Burns (R-Montana), a cosponsor of the Senate CAN-SPAM bill."

"The House is expected to schedule a final vote on the bill for December 2. If passed, it will then go to President Bush to be signed into law. The House voted 392-5 Saturday to approve its pumped-up version of CAN-SPAM, which originally passed the Senate in October."
