Civil Liberties

I don’t always agree with the ACLU, but here are a few causes of theirs I support.

Support Oversight of the Secret FISA Court

"Under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (most commonly known as FISA), a secret intelligence court was created to authorize government wiretaps in foreign intelligence investigations. Since its initial enactment, FISA has been steadily expanded in ways that pose an increasing threat to individual rights."

Speak Out: Flag Amendment Passes House – Thank or Spank Your Representative

"On June 3 the House of Representatives narrowly voted to approve the so-called flag protection amendment. This amendment would alter the First Amendment for the first time in its history and allow Congress to outlaw the physical desecration of the flag."

In regards to the following, I do not morally condone homosexual behavior. However, I do not think there is sufficient reason to make gay marriages illegal. In fact, I think it would be helpful, particularly as it relates to health benefits from employers (see earlier blog entries with specific mention of the University of Pittsburgh’s same-sex benefit woes).

Oppose Writing Intolerance into the U.S. Constitution

"Spurred by Canada’s recent decision to legalize gay marriages, a coalition of right-wing religious groups has launched a campaign to amend the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as strictly between a man and a woman, invalidate all state and local domestic partnership laws and nullify civil rights protections based on marital status. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) has advanced their goal by introducing H.J. Res 56, the ‘Federal Marriage Amendment.’"

Support Corrections to the PATRIOT Act

"The USA PATRIOT Act and related government actions undercut many important checks and balances on government law enforcement and intelligence powers."

"Under this Act and other Administration actions that were taken without congressional involvement, the government can search your home without notifying you, can get a list of the books you have obtained from your library and your local bookstore and require your local librarian and bookseller to keep this hidden from you, can keep a file on how often you go to church, which churches you attend and the medications you use — even if these activities have nothing to do with the fight against terrorism ."

Support the Freedom to Read!

"With the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act, the FBI gained the power to search your library and book-buying records without probable cause of any crime or intent to commit a crime. Furthermore, librarians and others who are required to turn over records are not allowed to say that the search has occurred or that records were given to the government."

I Now Pronounce You Man and Husband

Personally, I am against the idea of gay marriages, but that is from a religious standpoint. I don’t see a reason why they should be illegal. In fact, I think legal gay marriages would go a long way to fixing health care inequalities. As long as the Catholic Church never condones it, I’ll be happy.

Canadian Leaders Agree to Propose Gay Marriage Law
By CLIFFORD KRAUSS

“ORONTO, June 17 – The Canadian cabinet approved a new national policy today to open marriage to gay couples, paving the way for Canada to become the third country to allow same-sex unions.”

Preaching in Sin

Female priests and bishops are one thing. I might not agree with them, but I can appreciate the arguments made for them. I DO NOT understand how ANY Christian, let alone clergy, could justify living a homosexual lifestyle. The Episcopal Church, once just an accident of history (yay, Henry VIII) and a mere sidestep from the Roman Catholic Church, has really gone off the deep end.

Gay bishop-elect: ‘I do believe this is of the spirit’

“(CNN) — Episcopalians in New Hampshire elected the church’s first openly gay bishop Saturday. The Rev. V. Gene Robinson cannot take office until he gains the approval of clergy and laity at a national church convention in July in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but his election has already stirred controversy.”

Same-Sex Health Benefits

There’s an ongoing controversy at the University of Pittsburgh regarding same-sex benefits. I’m going to send in the following as a letter to the editor of the Pitt News.

Same-sex benefits do not make sense financially. Such benefits will not make sense until homosexual civil unions are recognized by the state as legally binding contracts like their heterosexual counterparts.

Before offering health benefits to partners, insurance companies want assurance of a binding marriage contract. This ensures permanence in the relationship. Without that permanence, fraud and abuses abound (eg Benefits could be offered to partners who are little more than roommates.). One might be tempted to call marriage impermanent these days, given the ~50% divorce rate. However, when the marriage contract is willfully terminated, benefits need no longer be offered to the divorced partner. Marriage is permanent in the sense that it does not cease with a simple “good-bye” as unbound partnerships can.

If I were making decisions for an insurance company, I would make it prohibitively expensive for a company to offer benefits to partners of its employees. This would serve to offset the inherent liabilities. I suspect that this is already current practice. Thus it does not make sense for Pitt, or any other company or institution in PA, to offer benefits to any unbound partners, same-sex or otherwise. Instead of crying to the ACLU or picketing the university, advocates for same-sex benefits should focus on getting homosexual civil unions recognized by the state as marriage contracts.

Diversity My Foot

It’s funny how diversity education never includes tolerance for orthodox religious views.

Bible-Reading Prison Workers Win Minnesota Lawsuit

“ST. PAUL, Minn. (Reuters) – Two prison employees reprimanded for reading their Bibles in silent protest of an employer-sponsored training session on homosexuality have been awarded $78,000 in damages by a federal jury, their attorney said on Friday. “
