Immoral Majority

The Church should not be a democracy. To put it another way, in the words of G.K. Chesterton, “Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to that arrogant oligarchy who merely happen to be walking around. “

Episcopalians approve gay bishop

“MINNEAPOLIS – The Episcopal Church voted Tuesday to approve the election of its first openly gay bishop, a decision that risks splitting the denomination and shattering ties with its sister churches worldwide.”

[…]

In comments after the vote, Bishop Robert Duncan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, spoke for those opposed to Robinson’s approval, saying they were “filled with sorrow” and feel a “grief too deep for words.”

“This body has denied the plain teaching of Scripture and the moral consensus of the church throughout the ages,” Duncan said. “This body has divided itself from millions of Anglican Christians throughout the world.”

Preaching in Sin

Female priests and bishops are one thing. I might not agree with them, but I can appreciate the arguments made for them. I DO NOT understand how ANY Christian, let alone clergy, could justify living a homosexual lifestyle. The Episcopal Church, once just an accident of history (yay, Henry VIII) and a mere sidestep from the Roman Catholic Church, has really gone off the deep end.

Gay bishop-elect: ‘I do believe this is of the spirit’

“(CNN) — Episcopalians in New Hampshire elected the church’s first openly gay bishop Saturday. The Rev. V. Gene Robinson cannot take office until he gains the approval of clergy and laity at a national church convention in July in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but his election has already stirred controversy.”

Missing the Point

Vatican Bars Seven Ordained Women

"Less than a month after the Vatican called the ordination of women to priesthood "an affront to the dignity of women, whose specific role in the Church and society is distinctive and irreplaceable," seven women priests were excommunicated for failing to repent by the Church-issued July 22 deadline."

These women who were "ordained" as Roman Catholic priests are, to a large extent, missing the point of being Catholic at all. We Catholics must have faith that the Holy Spirit is guiding our leaders' decisions. Obedience is not a dirty word. If they have no intention of listening to the pope's instructions, why do they want to appeal their excommunication? Why not just join a Reformation church, such as the Lutherans or Episcopalians, who allow female ordination and lack a clear and consistent hierarchical governing structure? If they were really as intent on changing the Church as they claim, they would do so from within and remain obedient to the Peter's successor. Catholic faith includes faith in Sacred Tradition and the guidance of our clerical superiors. The Catholic Church is not a democracy, nor should it be. Just look at what party politics has done to our country to see why.

Teaching the Truth

This is another case of liberals having a cow over protecting sacred beliefs. Secular Humanism forbid *chuckle* someone actually try to defend a CONSISTENT set of beliefs.

Catholic campuses head for showdown over obedience to church, academic freedom

A deadline looms Saturday that could ignite a smoldering conflict over academic freedom between the Roman Catholic hierarchy and theologians at the nation's 235 Catholic colleges and universities.

The winners and losers won't be immediately clear, but in coming years jobs and the shape of Catholic higher learning may be at stake.

Acting on instructions from the Vatican, U.S. bishops have ordered Catholics who teach their faith's doctrine, morality, Scripture, law or history at Catholic schools to obtain a "mandatum" (mandate, in English) from the bishop of the diocese where the college is located.

The document, which the bishops agreed should be obtained by June 1 — this Saturday — attests the theologian teaches only authentic Catholicism.

Catholic Reform?

[Here's another post by Jerry. This won't be all, though. There WILL be more. I WILL toss in my $2.50 (This is waaaaay beyond $0.02) some time soon (probably after finals are over). – Funky]

Here's a liberal Brit take on the American Catholic Church. Not to minimize the terrible consequences of this scandal, but I think this is another case of liberal media projecting its wishes/ideology on a situation. Aside from that poll in the Wall Street Journal, we have a lot of speculation bulked up only by a brief chat with one liberal American theologian. *yawn*

Sex scandals may lead Catholics in US to defy Rome
