Scott Hahn has a New Online Resource on Scripture Studies

I just received a letter in the mail from from the St.
Paul Center for Biblical Theology
, which was founded by the Evangelical convert
to Catholicism, Scott Hahn, and his wife Kimberly. Dr. Hahn has been dreaming of
helping Catholics know the Bible better for sometime, and reminded us in the letter
that St. Jerome wrote “Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of God”.

This center has a free online Bible Studies Course, an introduction to the Bible
geared towards HS students, and a periodical called Breaking
the Bread
–a year-long subscription for the latter may be had by making an online
donation to the Center. He has several other interesting projects in the works,
and commend this website to all as something to use and watch over time as the services
develop.

The letter I received was also a request for funds–I hope to send him some money,
but at the very least we should pray for this new work and spread the word.

Goodbye to a Man With a Big Heart

At choir practice this evening, Donna, of Quenta Narwenion, informed me that Gerard, of A Catholic Blog for Lovers and caretaker of St. Blog’s Parish, had died. I must confess that I didn’t know him well. I tried to help him set up RSS for his blog. We never did get that working for him. I read all my regulars through RSS these days, so I haven’t read his blog in quite some time.

Anyhow, I’ve only ever heard good things about him and, regardless of whether or not we were friends, it’s sad when a parish loses a loyal, long-time member. As a tribute to Gerard, I’ve collected links to posts about his death from other members of St. Blog’s.

Dawn Eden, of the Dawn Patrol describes herself as "a nondenominational, small-'e' evangelical Protestant" who takes essentially "a sola scriptura approach to moral issues". She believes "that the Bible is the inerrant word of God". Why do I mention these things. I want to grab the attention of evangelical and fundamentalist readers.

Dawn has written an interesting piece about Christians and contraception. There's a lot of disagreement among Christians about the appropriateness of contraception, or lack thereof. I'd like my Protestant readers to read another Protestant's support of Catholic reproductive teachings and comment.

Hungry Hungry Augustine…of Hippo

OK, so the title is cheesy. Sue me. Anyhow, the remains of St. Augustine, my patron,
were taken to Rome recently and Zenit published a few articles about the occasion.

Augustine
Faced an Emptiness, Says Cardinal Ratzinger

“O Lord my God, I believe in you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Insofar as I can, insofar as you have given me the power, I have sought you. I became weary and I labored. O Lord my God, my sole hope, help me to believe and never to cease seeking you. Grant that I may always and ardently seek out your countenance. Give me the strength to seek you, for you help me to find you and you have more and more given me the hope of finding you. Here I am before you with my firmness and my infirmity. Preserve the first and heal the second. Here I am before you with my strength and my ignorance. Where you have opened the door to me, welcome me at the entrance; where you have closed the door to me, open to my cry; enable me to remember you, to understand you, and to love you. Amen.” – Saint Augustine
