Who Deep Links to Me?

Technorati and similar ranking services are nice, and fun to use, but they all seem to have a nasty flaw. They give equal weight to surface links and deep links. It’s nice to be on somebody’s blogroll, but it’s even nicer to be cited. Does anybody know of a ranking service that 1) gives greater importance to deep (i.e., individual post) links and 2) allows one to see incoming deep links only?

Catholic Blog Awards

There's still time (until 3PM CST) to nominate blogs for a Catholic Blog Award (*hint* *hint*). Here are the rules:

1. All Blogs nominated must be primarily Catholic in nature.
2. Please do not nominate someone repeatedly for the same category.
3. Please also restrict nominations to one person per category.
4. It is possible to vote for a blog in more than one category.
5. For a Blog to be nominated for the "Best New Blog" Category it must have been created since last years' awards.
6. For a blog to be nominated, it must have been active since last year's awards. Blogs that have been active in the past year but have now closed are eligibile to be nominated
7. I have requested that your name and email address be submitted on the form. I will keep this information confidential. If your name or e-mail address is missing, your nomination will not be accepted. Thanks and happy nominating!!!

Welcome to the Desert of the Real

Ye olde blog has undergone a bit of a facelift. Fahim Farook’s Blog software served me well for close to four years. Alas poor Fahim hasn’t had time to keep the tool current with the times. WordPress has some pretty groovy plugins and whatnot, so there ought to be some fun experiments down the pike.

As always, thanks for reading. 🙂

Who Reads These Things, Anyway?

Do you ever wonder who reads your blog? I do, sometimes. What are they like? How did they come to find this blog, and what keeps them coming back?

I like to imagine that there’s somebody out there who just happened to stumble upon my blog and thought to him/herself, "Well, now. This looks amusing." And then this person went and read through all of the things I posted over the months I’ve kept this blog. It’s flattering, isn’t it? Just think, somebody out there might click on a bookmark or type the URL into their browser simply to find out what I happen to want to talk about today. That’s got to be worth something in our busy 24/7 lives.

So to everybody who takes a moment out to look here for amusement, entertainment, and shelter from prosaic life, I feel compelled to say:

I really must apologize for the disappointment. So sorry.

Gutsy Move

My kilt-wearing buddy, Adam Graham, has added an interesting twist to the 2006 Bloggies.

"The blog awards, particularly in the field of politics are an ideologial monolith. Still, I’ve got to tell you I’ve been getting some hits off the awards page (39 so far). I’m not nominated, but I’m giving the prize for the political blogs, a copy of the Screwtape Reports."

&quo; You read it right folks, Daily Kos, Talking Points Memo, Crooks and Liars, Firedog Lake, and Wonkette are battling out for an award where the biggest prize (other than bragging rights) is MY book, a book by a Conservative Christian Republican."

"The humor and irony of this situation is thick. I was prepared for the possibility of a Liberal blog winning the Bloggies when I offered it, but not the absolute certainty of it."

"Of course, whoever wins, I’ll send the book to. Will they want it? Will they accept delivery?"

Be sure to read the rest of the post as well as the follow-up posts to find out how the left wing of the blogosphere has reacted thus far.

For the record, I am not a Republican, nor am I a Democrat. I am a disgruntled Independent who registers with whichever party is politically useful at the time. If Pennsylvania had open primaries I wouldn’t have to do that. But I digress. My point is that I have no horse in this race. I’m just interested to see how this thing plays out.
