THE INTERNET DEBACLE – AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW
by Janis Ian

When I research an article, I normally send 30 or so emails to friends and acquaintances asking for opinions and anecdotes. I usually receive 10-20 in reply. But not so on this subject! I sent 36 emails requesting opinions and facts on free music downloading from the Net. I stated that I planned to adopt the viewpoint of devil’s advocate: free Internet downloads are good for the music industry and its artists.

I’ve received, to date, over 300 replies, every single one from someone legitimately “in the music business.” What’s more interesting than the emails are the phone calls. I don’t know anyone at NARAS (home of the Grammy Awards), and I know Hilary Rosen (head of rhe Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA) only vaguely. Yet within 24 hours of sending my original email, I’d received two messages from Rosen and four from NARAS requesting that I call to “discuss the article.”

Tolerance?

I'm not tolerant of homosexuality, but I don't think children of homosexual parents should be treated any less respect than those of heterosexual parents, adopted parents, or single parents. On the other hands, I hope Nickelodeon doesn't plan to legitimize homosexual lifestyles for children.

Nickelodeon to air special on gay parents despite protests

"NEW YORK (AP) — Despite a staggering 100,000 e-mails and phone calls in protest, Nickelodeon will telecast a special for children about same-sex parents on Tuesday night. "

Great Band

I saw my second favorite band in concert this weekend. I decided to give them a bit of a plug here.

Brother

"BROTHER presents a unique blend of world music and rock & roll with enough of a commercial edge to snatch up fans of all ages. BROTHER hits all of the bases in a musical home-run." – Music Connection, March 2002

"a set-list to die for…and big steel balls to make it work." – UK Burn magazine, July 2001

"It's not an earthquake… it's the leather kilt-wearing, didgeridoo-blowing, bagpipe-wielding force of nature that is BROTHER" – Jamie Lee Curtis

‘Casablanca’
Tops List of Movie Romances

By Bob Tourtellotte

When it comes to movies and romance, they don’t make them like they used to.

At least, that is what directors, writers, actors and other filmmakers polled by the American Film Institute think. They chose 1942’s “Casablanca,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, as the best U.S. love story ever told on film.

I saw “Casablanca” for the first time recently, and while I found it to
be a very well made and interesting movie, I wouldn’t call it the best love story
ever. I’m also disappointed that “When Harry Met Sally” isn’t near the
top of AFI’ list.
