Road to Dystopia

Utopia theory

“From theories of pedestrian movement and traffic flow to voting processes, economic
markets and war, researchers are striving towards a physics of society”

“‘It may be’, said US sociologist George Lundberg in 1939, ‘that
the next great developments in the social sciences will come not from professed
social scientists, but from people trained in other fields.’ Take a look at
any issue of a physical-sciences journal in the past five years and you will see
one such field staking its claim vigorously. Physics is muscling its way into social
science. Not content with explaining the behaviour of atoms and electrons, semiconductors,
sand and space-time, physicists are now setting out to understand the behaviour
of people.”

It seems to me that the surest way to invite dystopia is to seek utopia. Witness
communism, eugenics, and other vain efforts to make the world perfect through logic
and reason.

F.B.I.
Scrutinizes Antiwar Rallies

By ERIC LICHTBLAU

“WASHINGTON, Nov. 22 The Federal Bureau of Investigation has collected extensive
information on the tactics, training and organization of antiwar demonstrators and
has advised local law enforcement officials to report any suspicious activity at
protests to its counterterrorism squads, according to interviews and a confidential
bureau memorandum.”

Congress
Expands FBI Spying Power

By Ryan Singel

“Congress approved a bill on Friday that expands the reach of the Patriot Act,
reduces oversight of the FBI and intelligence agencies and, according to critics,
shifts the balance of power away from the legislature and the courts.”

Oppose
Government Surveillance of Peaceful Protesters

“The ability to speak freely and peacefully protest government policies is
a cherished right, as enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
A confidential FBI memo leaked to the New York Times confirms however that the federal
government is targeting innocent Americans engaged in nothing more than lawful protest
and dissent.”

“In the memo the FBI advocates spying on peaceful protesters and indicates that protesters
who engage in civil disobedience or other disruptive acts should be treated like
potential terrorists. It confirms that the government has monitored the actions
of peaceful protesters and wants intelligence about protesters to be reported to
the nearest FBI field office or terrorism task force.”

“Peaceful protesters should not be treated as potential terrorists nor spied upon
by federal government agents. Not only is this a misuse of public funds that could
be used to find real terrorists, it chills free speech activities and inhibits the
public debate on important issues.”

Senate Amends, Approves Spam Bill

Updated CAN-SPAM Act faces another vote, but could become law soon.
By Grant Gross

"WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate approved a national spam bill on Tuesday that would allow fines of up to $6 million or jail terms of up to five years for some spammers. But the bill’s legislative journey is not over yet. The Senate, by unanimous consent, approved the House version of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act of 2003. The bill must now return to the House for final approval because the Senate version included some technical corrections to the House version, said a spokesperson for Senator Conrad Burns (R-Montana), a cosponsor of the Senate CAN-SPAM bill."

"The House is expected to schedule a final vote on the bill for December 2. If passed, it will then go to President Bush to be signed into law. The House voted 392-5 Saturday to approve its pumped-up version of CAN-SPAM, which originally passed the Senate in October."

Master’
and ‘slave’ computer labels unacceptable, officials say

“LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) — Los Angeles officials have asked that
manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms ‘master’
and ‘slave’ on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable
and offensive. The request — which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components
— came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices
labeled ‘master’ and ‘slave’ and filed a discrimination complaint
with the county’s Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.”

Apparently, Iliad hates it, too.
