I wrote the article Advogado commented on, and he seems to have missed my point. Whenever one is arranging governmental policies and social structures, one looks at general trends and tendencies, not specific cases. Society has no reason, in general, to encourage homosexuals to marry. They do not, as a group, raise children. There may be isolated instances where this goes on, but by and large they do not seek to care for children, so society has no reason to give them benefits for doing so. There may be instances where children have been raised by wolves, but it would be waste of time and money to encourage and subsidize wolf households and implement governmental policies whereby infants are entrusted to wolves. Besides, the incidence of homosexuals couples adopting is very rare indeed. Furthermore, the incidence of homosexual couples staying together for long is also very rare. A psychologist familiar with the statistics of the high failure rate of homosexual "marriages" referred to the idea of them as "a sick joke." It's clear to me that advocate of homosexual "marriage" are attacking the institution of marriage from behind (no pun intended).

One would be hard pressed to make a case that there is any good served by encouraging homosexual persons to marry.

It not hard at all. You have a homosexual couple living down the hall in your apartment building raising two children. Tax breaks could allow a parent to stay home with their children to make sure they become educated and keep out of trouble. Financial benefits such as the extension of health insurance to include family members would have obvious benefits to the spouse and family as a whole. And the benefits of marriage may encourage them to have more children who could do things like serve in the military, pay taxes, and become productive members of the work force.
