My own AOL experience fits the description above. While I was in high school I used one of those disks to get some free hours, but I was never able to log on, except to enter the code for the free hours, hand over the number to my checking account for billing should I choose not to cancel, and establish a screen name. However, even though I never actually was able to use the service, not even to go online to cancel the trial subscription, AOL started billing me, pulling money from my checking account. When I called to have the account cancelled, the customer service representative was first annoyed that I couldn't just cancel via the online software — how dare I call and ask to speak to a human being! — and then said, "Well how are we supposed to make any money if you cancel your service?"

So, to this day, I too loathe AOL.
